Tiscali LLU Plans - dual pricing strategy?
Tiscali yesterday made posted details on their 2005-2007 plan, which included some interesting information on their Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) plans:
- Committing EUR90m/£61m to LLU in the UK over three years
- Will be spent on a ’selective unbundled network’ i.e. cherry picking the most attractive areas
- 27 Exchanges have been ordered so far
This cherry picking approach seems to suggest that rather than using LLU to provide cheap broadband offers like UKOnline, Tiscali plans to use LLU to improve margins. In my view it would lead to too much confusion if only a small number of Tiscali users were able to get the lower prices by being in ‘franchise’.
However, I guess it is still possible that they could follow UKOnline’s lead, especially given their history of price leadership.
Other highlights from the announcement include:
- UK to remain Tiscali’s largest operation
- LLU will be ADSL2+ enabled providing speeds up to 24Mbps
- VoIP service is to launch in the UK in 2005
- Video services will initially focus on PC-focussed downloads: Tiscali MovieClub. Second-phase video will be TV-based VoD
- Tiscali Plus’ services platform to be launched – single personalised portal to access online services (storage, website builder, photos, email, calendar) and transactional services (games, music, SMS, fax, video download)
