Vonage Update: I’m Having A Lot Of Problems
I'm not having the best experience setting up my Vonage service. At the moment I can make calls but I can't receive calls.
My vonage kit arrived in the post yesterday. I was surprised to open it and find a router rather than the simple switch I was expecting that would just plug into my existing wireless router. I couldn't work out how to connect the new router to my exisiing router and not mess up my home network (2 pcs, 1 xbox and a streamium) so I called Vonage.
They advised me on how to connect my devices and after 40 mins I managed to make my first call. However, it was only later that I realised that I couldn't receive any calls and after another 30 min call to Vonage I still couldn't.
Having two routers on my network has created other problems:
- I can't connect to messenger
- I couldn't connect to my online gaming service (fixed)
- I can't share files between my devices
I think that Vonage's support issues must be huge. Supporting routers isn't easy and can generate a huge amount of support calls that can easily eat up the £9.99 monthly subscription in support costs. If I was running Vonage I would be trying to find a simplier device to support like a switch or a 'dumbed' down router with most of the functionality taken out.
I'll give them another call if I get home early enough tomorrow to see if I can, 3 days later, get the service fully operational.

This is EXACTLY the content I like at Connected! You are generally testing, buying, considering the same technologies/gadgets I am: (broadband, wireless, games, VoIP, etc) you just do it a little earlier than I do which is great for me. Just last night, the missus and I were talking about ordering Vonage service…but wifi router + vonage router…sounds complicated. I thought it would be an adapter that would connect to my router through an ethernet plug or something. Then the whole Messenger not working, not receiving calls…I will hold off for now.

I think Vonage has a big problem. I tried to transfer my business number from Qwest to Vonage, and Vonage dropped the number on the transfer. Qwest and Vonage each said it was the otherÂ’s fault, but Vonage had the authority and therefore the responsibility to be sure it was done right. It took almost two months for Vonage to restore the line and cost me over $8000 in client business. I put the log, correspondence, and everything at http://www.netadventures.biz/vonageproblem.htm. I donÂ’t see that Vonage has much in the way of core values or ethics, and what they did was probably illegal. IÂ’ve complained to the FCC, but the current Administration has gone south Something about the EmperorÂ’s new clothes I think.

I have had problems with vonage over charging me and saying i signed up for a premium plan, when all I wanted was a fax line that was suppose to cost only $14.99/month. I was billed >$28.00/moth and the fax never worked right. Had to reboot the modem twice a week at least. I had to switch back to qwest and now they want to charge me $39.99 disconnection fee!!! I was told I could change back anytime at no additional charge. They suck…corrupt…it is a ‘gotcha’ deal….they must be stopped!!!
