Citizen Vigilantism At Work

When I was first introduced to blogging by Alistair and Loic from Typepad, they demonstrated to me the power of blogging by showing how posts from their blogs about certain companies were coming higher in search results than those of the actual companies.

Surely more companies should monitor what is said about them in blogs to make sure they are represented correctly? Otherwise, they could end up suffering from concerted campaigns to smear their names like this one. I think more companies need to be proactive like Plaxo, PubSub and LiteFeeds who responded within minutes to posts I made.

At one of my old companies, I used to keep an eye on the various financial message-boards to make sure that any good news was shared as soon as possible and that any errors in ‘analysis’ were ‘corrected’. I had to be careful though as we were publicly listed and I was operating unofficially.

Should all companies have an official person?
