So You’ve Been Digged - What Next?

As I mentioned earlier, I was ‘dugg’ for the first time yesterday and the effect on my site traffic of being dugg has been nothing but impressive. I don’t have a full days worth of stats yet but yesterday my traffic and visitors doubled even though I was only on the digg homepage for two hours during my reporting period, so it will interesting to see what happens when I get a full days worth of stats. I hope blogware don’t cancel my free blog as I think my bandwidth usage is shooting through the roof!At first I was disappointed as all the comments for my article were placed on digg and none were placed on my site. Then I remembered why I started blogging in the first place - so that I could share my views and to test a few ideas that I have at work (I work in Strategy for an ISP). Yes, I want more traffic, but my real goal is to see what other people think so I’ve decided that I don’t mind that all the ‘thoughts’ are on digg and not on my site.

However, I would like to give my regular readers a chance to see and participate in what the ‘diggers’ think of my posts and I do want to capture some of the Digg visitors so I have done the following:

  • I have created a new component which will show all visitors to my blog other articles that have been digged. Hopefully, even visitors who are entered via a digg will see this and will follow some of the links
  • On articles that have been dug I have added some text saying that this article has been dug, along with a link to the digg page so that users can see and participate in the digg comments
  • I have added links to other articles and categories in my blog within the digged post in an attempt to capture some of the visitors from digg
  • The more pages they read on my blog the increased likelihood that they will remember it and return
  • I have made a point of asking visitors from digg to comment on my post - I think that if they comment there is a greater chance that they will come back later on to see if someone else has responded to them.

I will take these actions everytime I get ’slashdotted’ by a bigger site or blog.

I think it's great that you have a grown an audience due to digg (that's how I arrived here), and I'm particularly intrigued by how you seem to be thinking of your audience in a business sense, “how can i maximize my veiwership by taking advantage of recent trends.” It's an interesting give and take of how most blogs start organically with humble self gratification intentions to over time slowly shifting to more of a commercial like purpose of getting one's ideas and thoughts out to as big an audience as possible. We all desire to be heard. Who could honestly allow thier efforts and ideas to continue to fall on deaf ears?
Keep it up though, I hope you achieve what you you are after with this site. It's well done.
