I’ve just installed the new Google Desktop tool and I’m not very impressed. The new tool now offers a sidebar option that now includes new components that show the latest gmail messages, give the latest news, allows the taking of notes, shows web history and displays the weather forecast.Although some people may find this useful, I think it shows too much info-I might as well just fire up my browser. It also takes up a lot of precious real estate on my desktop which is a no-no for me.
Also, I’m a bit concerned about how much info Google are collecting. To turn on the advanced features you have to agree to let Google collect information on your browsing history so that it can display more targetting ‘news’ stories. Google say that this is all they want the info for more, but I’m not so sure.
