I’m not quite sure how they are tracking users, but HBO are sending nasty letters to bittorrent users who are downloading their programming. I have a sneaky suspicion that HBO, and maybe other media companies as well, are adding their own torrents to trap users.I’m not sure how users could avoid this. There are various IP blockers available like ProtoWall and PeerGuardian2 but I don’t think these will protect users if the file has been seeded by companies like HBO.
Although it is impossible for media owners to go after all P2P users, if the new tactic is to send nasty letters then I think a lot of users will be dissuaded from trying to download files.
