Firefox 1.5 - Will You Be Upgrading?
The beta release of Firefox 1.5 will be hitting the streets in September, and will include faster browser navigation, improvements to back and forward button performance, drag-and-drop reordering for browser tabs, some improvements to popup blocking, software update functionality, an improved extensions system and support for technologies like SVG (similar to Macromedia Flash).SearchEngineJournal pointed out that a lot of the current Firefox 1.0.6 extensions will not work not work with Firefox 1.5. I thought I’d check how many of my extensions wouldn’t work and 9 of my extensions currently don’t work with 1.5/Deer Park: gmail notifier, fireFTP, Google Pagerank status, sort extensions, Chromedit, Minimise to tray, Lasttab, URI id and Bookmarks synchronizer.
Unfortunately, I am so attached to some of these extensions that I can’t imagine using Firefox without them. Firefox 1.0.6 is a very good browser and I think I’m going to stick with it rather than upgrading to 1.5.
I think a lot of other people will be in the same boat as me. If you want to see which of your current extensions won’t work on 1.5 then install Deer Park, which does a compatibility test before its first launch.

Your extensions iwll probably work fine. That's one of the reasons that Firefox has beta releases, so that extensions creators can update their extensions to be compatible with the new release.

Developers of plug ins will adapt them to work with 1.5. Its not a big issue.

As most of you Firefox users already know, you can install the “new” version on another drive or to another folder and leave the previous installation intact, just in case the new version isn't to your liking. Just make a new shortcut on your taskbar or have it make a new icon on your desktop to launch. This way you can still have all your extensions and themes working with the older version and not have to wait forever for “your” favorite Firefox extension to come available with the new release.
Believe me, if you install the new version and you don't like it, you can simply delete the newest one and EASILY fall back on the last version you installed without looking all over the net for it, because it's still on your hard drive. Extensions and all!
I've been doing this since version .08. When I see that my favorite extensions are available and I surf the web just the same as the last version that I installed, then I delete the older install and have no “down-time” by not having those extensions available.
I think you get the idea here….so my answer to the posted question is…”yes”. I will install it to my F drive and use the shortcut. (I have 4 hard drives, so I have plenty of room)
