New Type Of Spam - Referral Spam

In my meeting with Kim from Blogware she told me about a new type of spam which at the moment blogware are calling referral spam.  Basically this is where spammers link to your website in the hope that when you check out your referral stats you will click on the link to see who they are.

Until Kim explained to me what was going on I have admit that I was falling for this tactic as I was trying to work for instance why 120 people from petsellers.net were clicking through to my blog!
Seems like a pretty dumb spamming tactic to me as it is totally untargetted and is hitting such a small niche of users.  I guess people will do anything to make money.

Yeah, this has been bugging me for months. Did Kim have any solutions?

Our optimization work is including some referral spam tools, as of the new year (exact date tbd) you'll be able to block bad referrers, and they'll not be able to access your blog anymore. More details closer to the release!
