SEO: Pure Luck Or An Exact Science?

I can’t count how many SEO articles I have read which supposedly give tips on how to achieve high rankings and highly ranked keywords. Some of the tips seem quite obvious, however some of the tips from the ‘experts’ are always qualified with ‘maybe’, ‘or ‘some people think this is good, some people think this is bad’, ‘this can have a negative effect’ etc etcEvery now and then I have a go at ‘optimising’ my blog for search engines by following the various tips, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen an uplift in my traffic that I can attribute to any changes I’ve made. Even though my blog now has a page rank of 5 and I have some top-ranking keywords in the UK (try searching for iTunes on www.msn.co.uk for instance) i really think it is more down to chance, or just writing about the write items, rather than because of any SEO work I have done.

Google et al obviously don’t publish exactly how their algorithms work, otherwise too many people would try and game the search results. Google’s algorithms seem to change so often, that trying to adapt is probably a full-time job.

I guess I want my blog to be successful so I will occasionally try out a few changes, the latest being adding adverts to the blog. Don’t worry, if my latest experiment does work and I start making
hundreds of dollars I will share my ‘tips’!!!
