I’ve spent some time today tidying up my template. My initial goals were to add some advertising, but I think that even with the new advertising, I’ve made the overall site easier to use, although I’m not too sure about the new orange theme.I’ve removed a lot of the excess links and components. Adding them was fun as I learnt about blogging, but I think they got in the way of what people wanted when they found my site – the posts. I’ve made it a lot easier to navigate around the blogs with links more clearly signposted, and I’ve also removed the MyBlogLog code as I think people were clicking on these links by mistake.
I decided to add advertising back just to see if I could generate some cash from the site. Although, I’m not going to quit my day job just yet, the numbers so far have been surprising. Especially when you consider that my site has been having performance problems over the last couple of days which must have been putting people off and all my tinkering which must have made the site hard to use.
So far I’ve added Google Adsense ads, and I will add Chitka eMiniMalls ads as soon as my application gets approved. According to Problogger these perform better than Adsense ads. It’ll be interesting to see how the ads perform when things settle down.
Let me know what you think of the new look. If you spot any fundamental mistakes I have made or if you have any other suggestions please let me know.
Also, if anyone can help with me the html to align my category navigation at the top of the page to the left rather than it being centred, and to also move it within the frame then please let me know. Trying to fix it has been driving me crazy.
