iTunes Sells More Music Than Tower Records and Borders

According to NPD which tracks music downloads, within the last 3 months iTunes has broken into the Top 10 music retailers in the US, moving ahead of Borders, Sam Goody and Tower Records. The current Top Ten are:

1. Walmart
2. Best Buy
3. Target
4. Amazon.com
5. FYE
6. Circuit City
7. iTunes
8. Tower Records
9. Sam Goody
10. Borders

I guess that the situation is probably very similar in the UK. Personally, I think I’ve only purchased around 4 CDs in the last year when I probably used to buy at least that many a month - and then I only bought these on holiday when I didn’t have access to a PC and because they were cheap.

It’ll be interesting to see how long Apple’s domination of online music can continue and whether it will extend into video once the market grows. According to NPD, 70% of digital music sales are through iTunes and I think they have about the same market share with the Apple iPod. Amazing.
