MP3tunes Launches - Two Years Too Late?

MP3tunes is a new site launch that allows users to upload and synchronise their mp3 music collections, which can then be streamed anywhere. It can even synchronise with iTunes.

There are two packages - a free service which doesn’t allow any uploads or a $39.95/year package offering unlimited storage and 128k audio streaming quality.

I’m really not too sure how attractive this service will prove to be. There definitely is a need for users to take their growing music collections around with them, but that’s why Apple sells so many iPods. I’m not sure how many people would be willing to pay an extra $39.95 for this privilege.

I also think the upload experience will be quite poor. On a typical broadband connection with a 256kbps upload speed it would take 8 days to upload a 20GB music collection.

Would you use the service? I won’t be.
