Telewest To Trial UK’s 1st HDTV service And Launch PVR In Q1 2006

Telewest very quietly published on its website details of its HDTV plans and also more details about its PVR. Even though Sky recently outlined its plans to launch new sports and movie HDTV channels next year, Telewest has gazumped Sky by trialling HDTV transmissions in South London.

Unlike Sky, Telewest’s service will not be delivered as new channels but via it’s Teleport TV-on-demand service. Viewers will also need to add Telewest’s new PVR service, TVDrive which incorporates an amazing three tuners. This means that two shows can be recorded at the same time that you are viewing one, although I seriously worry about anybody who actually needs this requirement.

The box holds 160GB which I personally think is a bit small to be storing HDTV programming, but I think Sky+ only stores 100GB. The service will cost £10-15 per month depending on which core TV package you have.

I’m a Telewest customer and until recently I couldn’t wait for the PVR to come out. Now I think I might be better off purchasing or building a Media PC for my next PC, which can perform the same functions via my new Xbox360.

Has anybody hooked up their Xbox360 to a Media PC yet? What’s the experience like?
