Del.icio.us Deal For Yahoo!
Yahoo! yesterday acquired Del.icio.us, continuing its acquisition spree in the Web 2.0 business, which included the acquisition of Flickr. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Yahoo! make a few more acquisitions. I wondered who would pick up Del.icio.us as it has had a big ‘For Sale’ written all over it for months. How else did the founders expect to make money other than through an acquisition?
Del.icio.us is a good example of how tagging is becoming more and more popular as web-users are relying more and more on community-driven content creation and discovery to assist in avoiding scam and poor quality sites. Community-based services like Del.icio.us, Digg, Wikipedia (to a lesser extent) and Slashdot make the discovery of good content easier by providing a mechanism for users to rely on each others judgment.
What will the deal mean for Del.icio.us users? For one, I don’t think it will be too long before adverts start appearing within Del.icio.us and accounts will probably have to be synchronized with Yahoo! accounts.
On the plus side, expect to see Del.icio.us tags appearing in Yahoo! search results. Also, Del.icio.us/Popular would make a great module on My Yahoo!
