Digg In Need Of Improvements - A Few Suggestions

I’m a big fan of Digg, although I think it’s becoming a victim of its own size. For those of you who haven’t used Digg yet, it is a news site that allows users to control which articles make it onto the homepage by ‘digging’ them.

Digg has grown tremendously fast and is proving extremely popular. However, it does have its failings. One major failing in my view is dupes, which I have experienced firsthand myself. A couple of my posts have been dugg twice this month. Although I’m not complaining about the extra traffic, I got 40K additional visitors yesterday from Digg, this shouldn’t have happened.

I’m not sure how Digg are going to address this problem. Maybe here should be a more rigorous enforcement of duplicate urls, where dupes aren’t allowed rather than being at the posters discretion.

Other improvements I think Digg could make are:

  • More categories, including geographic regions to account for differences in taste
  • Having volunteers manage each category to improve quality
  • Only displaying stories on the homepage from users who achieved say 10 promoted stories
  • Extend rating system to include some measure of quality i.e. if a user diggs a weak article or a dupe, then their rating is decreased
