Windows Live Messenger Beta - Save Your Paypal Money!
After using the Windows Live Messenger Beta for 24 hours I have to say that so far I haven’t been overwhelmed, and to be honest I can’t see what all the fuss is all about and why people are paying for invites on eBay.
There are two new features of note: “Windows Live Call” which allows PC-2-Phone calls in a similar manner to SkypeOut where prepaid credits are used up in calls, and the ability to send messages to offline users.
Voice calls to regular telephone numbers is only available to users in the US and UK for now and the service is operated by MCI Web Calling who used to be called Worldcom until they had some very well documented problems a few years ago…..
Anyway, I tried placing a call to one of my buddies but I had major firewall problems (why can’t they ever make these services firewall friendly? Grrr!!!) so I gave up.
I was hoping to see some sort of integration with Xbox Live but unfortunately there isn’t so I guess I have to wait for Windows Live Messenger 9.
I have to take my hands off to Microsoft for creating such a buzz around this product, which in my view doesn’t deserve the scramble for invites that has been created.
