UK To Trial CCTV Traffic Footage On Mobile Phones

The UK Government announced a service today that will allow mobile phone users to view video footage from motorway CCTV cameras to help users plan their journeys. 100 cameras will be available initially with the whole motorway network available by the end of the year.

I’m guessing that if you are supposed to use this service whilst stationary or before you set out, otherwise you might get fined £1000 for using a phone whilst at the wheel.

I can’t wait to try out this service. I do nearly 20K miles p.a in my car and the majority of them are on the motorways. I have a couple of options for the route I take to work and it’d be great if I could tap into the cameras each morning to find the quietest route.

At least then all I have to worry about are the speed cameras – picked up another 3 points on my licence this month. Maybe it’s time to get a radar detector…..
