How Much Storage Is Enough?

Techdigest have just written a feature about a media PC from EPC which offers the following hard drive choices - 300GB, 600GB, 1TB and a whopping great 2TB. This is the first time I’ve seen a system offered with TBs of storage.

When I built my new PC I put in two 250GB hard drives and I thought I was being excessive as my old system only had 210GB of storage. However, I’ve already filled one drive and I’m filling the other one so fast that I’m debating buying a 500GB drive. I think what I will do in the short-term is start putting stuff that doesn’t need sharing around the flat on my modded Xbox which has a 200GB drive.

What’s driving this crazy growth? Windows XP Media Center Edition. The PVR capabilities are addictive and I’m recording tonnes of stuff just so that I will always have something good to watch when I’m in a TV mood, as well as converting all of my DVDs to the right format so that all of my collection is available whenever I want via my PC or via by Xbox 360 or Xbox Extenders. I have no idea what will happen to my storage needs when I start downloading content.

Everyone is focusing on the software to manage all of this content, with Yahoo!, Microsoft etc showing off their latest wares at CES. But I don’t think as much thought has gone into how all of these devices are going to connect, and even less I think into where all of this content is going to be stored. HDD manufacturers tend to only offer drive sizes up to 500GB. They really need to start offering drive sizes in TB multiples.
