Is mobile TV the new MMS?
The Guardian Technology Blog poses an interesting question today: 'Is Mobile TV the new MMS?'
Do you remember how exactly a year ago the mobile networks were touting Video Calling as the killer app for 3G, and exactly a year before that they were singing the praises of MMS? It's amazing how these new killer apps that require handset upgrades seem to occur at the end of the year when the majority of handsets get sold….
I've never been a big user of MMS as I find the interface too fiddly, although I'm a big texter - I probably send around 400 a month. As for video calling, I think I've made two calls in the last 14 months just to see what the quality was like. Personally I think the cost structure is all wrong.
Do I think Mobile TV will go the same way as MMS and video calling? I'm not sure. I tried out the Sky TV service over Christmas a few times while I was waiting in queues and I have to say it was a lot better than I thought it would be. The audio quality was excellent even if the video did jump around a bit at times.
If the networks turned their services into on-demand services where users could pick their content rather than having to watch whatever is being streamed then I think it could be a winner.
Have you tried out a mobile TV service yet? What did you think?
