Be To Launch ADSL2+ Across The UK - Speeds 'Up To' 22Mbps

High-speed broadband provider Be has secured a £24.5m investment that
will enable it to begin a nationwide installation of ADSL2+ services of
up to 22Mbps.

So far, the ISP has enabled or begun enabling 52 exchanges in
London and will soon begin moving its kit into Birmingham and
Manchester. It aims to cover 50 per cent of the population by the end
of 2006.

I know I'm slightly biased, but I'm unable to get excited about ADSL2+ as the high speeds that it will offer will only be available to the lucky few who live within  2-3km of an exchange - the further away you are, the slower the potential speed you can get.  I think the average speed that most people will be able to get is around 4-8Mbps, which is nothing to write home about and certainly isn't enough to support future HDTV or VoD channels.

Cable is definitely going to be the winner in 2007, with speeds up to 50Mbps in the pipeline.
