Sony Researching ‘Xbox Live’ Service For PS3 - Isn’t It All A Bit Late?

I’ve played online with both a PS2 and Xbox and the main reason I plumped for a Xbox 360 rather than wait for a PS3 is because Microsoft just do online gaming better.

I assumed that Sony would be working hard to close the gap with the PS3, so I was shocked to read the following article on Ars Technica. Apparently, Sony weren’t planning on launching a service to rival Xbox Live with the PS3, but given the success of the Nintendo DS with its wireless gaming support, and Xbox Live on the Xbox 360 they are now are-considering. The company is sending around a questionnaire
to some gaming editors loaded with questions aimed at assessing whether or not people find online play fun, and what kind of (very Xbox Live-like) features they might like see.

With the PS3 only months away isn’t this all a bit too late?
