Newsvine Beta: - Pushing Web 2.0 To The Limits
Thanks to some very kind Connected readers last night I’ve been able to try out the Newsvine Beta service and all I can say is it is amazing. If Digg and Del.icio.us are Web 2.0 services then Newsvine is Web 2.5.
Newsvine collates stories from various Associated Press sources, but also allows users to create their own news columns. These columns can be seeded with articles created by each user or from links to external websites of interest.

Each article can be tagged a-la Del.icio.us, and also voted upon and in a similar fashion to Digg, with popular articles getting promoted to the homepage.
However, Newsvine has some key features that I think will make it stand out from the crowd:

- Revenue: Any ad revenue from any articles written by users is shared with the column owner. This is unique as at the moment sites like Digg and Del.icio.us keep all the money generated from content that is generated by their users
- Wider Coverage: Rather than focussing on just tech, Newsvine has much broader coverage. Current categories include Politics, Sports and Health
- Live Chat: Each article has its own chat room where discussion can be continued, with a live counter showing how many people are currently participating
Once this service is opened up, I believe it will grow at a phenomenal rate. I think the fact that ad revenue will be shared and because of the wider coverage, will encourage lots of people to seed articles. We may even see some Probloggers diverting their efforts to Newsvine because of the larger audience that it will have available.
I have a dozen or so invites available for Connected Readers (i.e. created an account) if anyone wants to try out the service. If you are already a user of Newsvine then check out my column here.
