Brits Slow To Adopt Mobile Internet

It’s a shame, that despite the fanfare surrounding the launch of 3G, only one in ten Brits actually use mobiles to access the internet. I think TechDigest have summed up one of the key reasons why mobile internet adoption in the UK is so low:

“Brits are just too cynical about excessive data charges to take up the service as it currently stands”

I was discussing this problem today with one of my old colleagues from Vizzavi, Vodafone’s old content arm, at a meeting at Google’s offices and we both expressed our disappointment with the lack of progress over the last couple of years. Rather than helping to develop the market, it seems like the networks have given up on developing and promoting content and are just trying to ram more and more ringtones and downloads down our throats.

In the past one of the ‘excuses’ cited was that the devices weren’t available to deliver the services that were on the roadmap. But with great phones on the market now like the Nokia N-Series, the networks can no longer hide behind this ‘reason’.
