Yahoo! Launch New Mobile Service: Yahoo! Go

Yahoo! has just launched Yahoo! Go in the UK, a new mobile portal, and it looks very impressive. The service is provided by an application that is downloaded to the phone which sets up the Yahoo! portal on the phone. Yahoo! Go allows smartphone users to:
- Send& receive emails
- Get alerts when new emails arrive
- Automatically synchronise phone address books with Yahoo! Address Book
- Synchronise phone calendar & tasks with Yahoo! Calendar
- Upload photos taken from the phone automatically to Yahoo! Photos
- Use IM
- Search the mobile internet
- Access Yahoo! news and other content
- Download ringtones etc
It all looks very impressive and will give the portals provided by the mobile networks a serious run for their money as Yahoo! in one single move have made available to mobile users all the key services from the website, which is much broader than anything the mobile operators like Vodafone can offer. Handset support is a bit limited and only Symbian Series 60 handsets from Nokia (6680, 6630, 6681 and N70) are supported. The latest version 3 of Symbian’s software isn’t supported so I can’t install the software on my Nokia N80 (lack of software support is becoming annoying). I’m so happy to see Yahoo! make a move like this, as I think one of the reasons the mobile net hasn’t taken off is that the major portals haven’t been supporting mobiles very well. Let’s hope that the service is successful and that others follow suit.
