Robert Scoble To Leave Microsoft: But What Did He Actually Do?
The big news over the weekend has been that Robert Scoble, Microsoft's Geek Blogger, is leaving to join new startup PodTech.net.
Reading all the posts made me realise that despite reading his blog for over a year I don't actually know what Scoble's official role was at Microsoft. Does anyone know what his official role was?
Either way, I think he's going to be a big loss to Microsoft as he has played a key role on putting a public face on the biggest company in the world. I know that some people believe that only bloggers read other blogger's blogs, but I really do think Scoble's was in a different class. TechCrunch sum it up very well in my view:
"This is a bigger blow to Microsoft than will be apparent at first. Robert was responsible for much of the positive press around Microsoft. He put a very human face on Microsoft, and did much to get people to take a new look at the long hated company. I’m not sure Microsoft could replace him, or if they will even try."
Good luck to you Robert. I know it must have been a tough decision to leave as everyone knows how much you genuinely love Microsoft. I'll be looking out for your new url.
Update: It seems that whatever it cost PodTech to hire Scoble was money well spent as news of Scoble's hiring brought down the PodTech website down

I believe he implemented and led the Channel 9 initiative, and was named Chief Blogging Officer (a semihonorary title, according to IT Conversations) in 2005.
