First Scoble And Now Bill: Gates To Step Down At Microsoft After 20 Years At The Helm
Bill Gates announced yesterday that after 20 years at Microsoft, he will gradually reduce his role over the next two years, before leaving the company. During his announcement, Gates explained that he has been working part-time for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and full-time for a company that has made him the richest man in the world, and he wished to reverse those priorities.
I feel sorry for Bill Gates sometimes as I don’t think he is given credit for the good he puts his massive wealth to. Yes he may be the richest man in the world, but not many people know that Gates and his wife spend more money on vaccines than UNICEF and the World Health Organization combined.I was shocked to realise that Microsoft is only 20 years old. I guess if I’d sat down and thought about it I probably would have guessed at somewhere around this mark. I don’t think anyone 20 years ago would have accurately predicted the growth of computers and the internet, or the pivotal role that Microsoft would play in shaping this new world.
I still remember vividly my first exposure to Windows. I must have been around 15 and I was spending the night at my brother’s future wife’s place. She had Solitaire playing on her Windows 3.1 machine and once my brother showed me how to play it I was hooked and I think I played it until around 6am in the morning. I really sucked at it and 17 years later I still do.
