I’ve Ditched My Smartphone And Bought a PDA!
Yes, it’s true. After being one of the biggest supporters on the planet of Smartphones, I’ve ditched my Nokia N80 (I’m using it just as a plain-old phone now) and bought a Dell Axim X51V. Why? Well, I’m working as a contractor now and I’ve lost my company laptop. I tried struggling on with just my Nokia N80 to download emails, browse the internet, use IM etc but it was proving too difficult with the small screen and the poor application support. Also, the battery on my poor N80 couldn’t handle the load and I had to recharge it twice a day which was a pain.
So, I ordered a Dell Axim X51V and I haven’t looked back since. Not only can it easily handle emails, browsing and IM but I can now also review and edit documents, watch and listen to my complete music and video collection via orb.com and make VoIP calls using the Skype Pocket PC client. The Skype client has been a revelation in terms of quality, and I swear it sounds better than my PC client. I know there is no logical reason for this, but somehow it does. I’ve also ordered a TomTom Navigator 6 GPS pack for my PDA, which should arrive tomorrow.
I know that the blogosphere has recently been writing eulogies for the PDA, but I don’t think the market for PDAs will ever die. There will always be users who require more functionality than can reasonably be packed into one device. Yes, you can now buy a smartphone that includes a 5MP camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, mp3 player, browser etc etc but it won’t be able to match a dedicated mp3 player like an iPod, an 8MP+ camera, a PDA with better battery life/screen. Dedicated devices will always offer more, no matter how much they manage to pack into smartphones.
My Current Devices:
- Phone: Nokia N80
- PDA: Dell Axim X51V with TomTom Navigator 6
- Camera: Vivitar ViviCam 8300s
