How To Make All Your MP3s Play At The Same Volume

I found this great article on how to make all your mp3s play at the same volume via Digg. I’ve tried using MP3Gain in the past, but I had problems. I think I ran into problems because I used the beta AAC convertor which was silly given that I only have around 200 AAC tracks in my 16,000 track collection.

MP3Gain adds extra information to the tags within the mp3 file to ensure that all tracks have the same volume. It does this by using an algorithm to calculate how loud the file actually sounds to a human’s ears. It also does this in a lossless way through the ID3 tags so it doesn’t impact the quality of your music files, and the modifications are fully reversible if you don’t like the results.

I followed the steps in OneTipADay.com’s guide on a couple of albums and then played them back via XBMC and it definitely brought to live one of my old Jazz albums, and ‘toned down’ one of my R&B albums which always bugs me as it’s twice as loud as any of my other albums and I always have to turn the volume down if it comes up in the shuffle, and up once it has finished. I checked if the result carried across to my iPod and they did once I’d turned off SoundCheck.
My PC is currently applying the gain to all my other tracks. It’s taken 4 hours to do 25% of my collection, so it’ll be finished in another 12 hours. A very big job, but it’ll be worth the wait I think.
