Be Careful What You Say Online. It Could Cost You Your Job

Lied on your last job application? Well, you might get caught out now. According to a recent survey by CareerBuilder.com, one in four managers now ‘Google’ potential employees and 51% of applications were rejected because of what was found.
The survey found that:
- 31% of candidates had lied about their qualifications
- 25% had poor communication skills
- 24% were linked to criminal behaviour
- 19% badmouthed their previous employer or colleagues
- 19% posted about drug or alcohol use
- 15% shared confidential information about a previous job
- 12% lied about an absence
- 11% posted provocative/inappropriate photographs
- 8% used an inappropriate screen name
I have to admit that I tend to Google everyone I meet. I even offended one of my new colleagues when he discovered I hadn’t Googled him before I joined! It’s amazing how much you can learn about a person before you meet them, which can be useful in business situations.
It’s almost impossible to stop information about yourself getting online now, and even harder to get it removed, as more and more historical information is getting indexed. But, at least you can avoid digging your own grave by being careful about what you post, being discreet, and being prepared to explain why certain information is online.
