Advice Needed - Should I Get a BlackBerry Pearl?
I’ve decided that after over 6 years with Vodafone, it’s time to leave.
I haven’t really been paying attention to the price plans from other networks as the price plan that I had from Vodafone worked fine for me - 350 mins and a £60 allowance for data and SMSs which worked out to 500 texts or 20MB. But since I got my Dell X51V, I’ve been using my N80 more and more as a modem and my data usage has shot up. The problem though isn’t the extra cash I’m spending, it’s more that because my cap is so ‘low’ rather than staying connected all day, I’m rationing my own usage to stay within my tariff.
I hate this, and my friend ‘Dollarman’ pointed out to me in the week that T-Mobile’s web ‘n’ walk Plus tariffs give unlimited data, as well as more minutes and texts, free usage of T-mobile hotspots and 300 wi-fi minutes a month with BT Openzone hotspots for less money!
I can’t believe I’ve been so out of touch and I’m switching ASAP. The only ‘problem’ I have is that the only phone they have that I like which has a built-in modem I can use with my Dell X51V, is the BlackBerry Pearl. I’m very anti ‘CrackBerry’ and I’ve seen how they can become like a drug to some people. Ive always been worried that I’ll become one of these people, as I like to leave my work behind me when I leave the office. So, I’m in two minds about getting one.
Is the BlackBerry Pearl a GOOD phone? I know it’s a good email device, but does anyone have experiences of using one as a phone? How does it compare to say a Nokia or a Sony Ericsson?

Everton,
So you’re worried that the 8100 wont be effective as a modem? right?
Comment by Everton Blair on 5 November 2006:
No, it should be ok as a modem. I want to see what readers think of using the blackberry as their main phone, rather than just for emailing
Comment by Dollarman on 5 November 2006:
So what is it exactly that you need that the 8100 doesn’t have?
Comment by Dollarman on 5 November 2006:
As a phone it is quite excellent. Its sure type is very good although I am one for multi tap and the doesn’t take long to start which I hate with many of the smart phones today.
Its light, very light and has great setting options.
The PC suite is not as sharp as say Nokia but its good enough. There is alot of advice on the blackberry forum under 8100 discussions. One guy has found a way to video encode on this device. Theres tones of stuff this gorgeous phone can do.
I can’t see me changing mine for quite a while.

Ideally I want a small handset that’s a good phone i.e. good at handling calls, good battery and good reception. I don’t need the smartphone type stuff to be honest, but I guess it’s a bonus

You want a small handset that’s a good phone - I have to reiterate that the pearl is 88g thats not far off half the weight of the N80 that you say you are currently using.
Check the link for the bonuses. I think I’ve done enough convincing…

You buy that phone, it is a good one. I do not have one, I have a SonyEricsson, but I have heard they are good enough and everybody agrees that they are very good looking as well. I am on Orange and I am very pleased with them.
