After being sceptical in the past of social networking sites, I’m actually starting to find LinkedIn useful. It’s helped me reconnect with old friends who I’d lost touch with, and it’s even lined up a few good job opportunities for me as a result of my profile being available. In fact, I have a job interview this Friday courtesy of LinkedIn.
In the last two days, LinkedIn has notified me of two interesting developments. Firstly, one of my friends has just got a senior position at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and I’m so proud that she’s decided to leave the corporate world behind, to try and make a difference in the world.
I got another update today that one of my old colleagues from Freeserve has joined not just O’Reilly but also TechCrunch UK. Imran Ali survived the move from Freeserve to Wanadoo, and also to Orange and is now Deputy Director of R&D for Orange, which means he has a very big budget to build and play with the latest tools, toys and gadgets. Yes, I’m very jealous.
I just love seeing that the old gang who launched Freeserve back in 1998/9 (the first ‘free’ ISP in the UK that within 6 months became the biggest in the UK and in my view kick-started the whole UK industry) are still going strong and doing well.
