How To Supplement Your Adsense Income And Increase The Total CPM For Your Pages

Over the last month or so the traffic on Connected Internet has been creeping up again as I’ve been posting frequently and my new layout is doing a good job of Engaging readers and getting them to read more posts.

My monthly Adsense cheque has now reached a level that is noticeable and is definitely making maintaining this blog rewarding, as well as a nice hobby. There isn’t a lot you can do to increase your CPM other than writing content that generates higher value ads and adding Adsense targetting to your pages.

So, the only way to increase the CPM for your pages. Is to add more ads. In my view this is a delicate balancing act - how do you add more ads without adding too many and scaring away potential readers or ruining your site design, whilst at the same time increasing the monetisation of your pages?

Well, there are some networks out there that can be incorporated easily into your site. Here are the ones I’ve added that have increased my total monthly revenues by around 60% in under a month.

Text Link Ads

linkads.gifI signed up for Text Link Ads following Martin from gHacks recommendation. Once your site has been approved, Text Link Ads will sell link ads on your site and also in your RSS feed on your behalf. You can decide how many links you want to add to your site or to your feed.

They managed to sell all 10 links on my site within 4 weeks - you can see them in the ‘Promotions’ section on the right of each page. In fact they’ve sold them so fast I’ve sent them an email to ask them to raise my rates, as my links could definitely go for more than the current $45pm for each link.

The good thing about Text Link Ads is that you don’t need a lot of traffic to sell links. I have another site that is really only experimental and is getting next to no traffic, but I’ve still managed to sell 3 links for $15 a month each.

AdBrite

I got an email from AdBrite this morning asking why I hadn’t implemented their code yet. To be honest, I can’t remember when I signed up but I’m glad I did. AdBrite offer ads in traditional formats that they will sell on your behalf once their code has been added to your page. The beauty of their system in my view is that they can occupy the same slot as your Adsense ads, so you don’t have to clutter your site with more ads. You can even set thresholds for each ad placement so that your Adsense ads will only be replaced by AdBrite ads if a certain CPM is exceeded i.e higher than what the equivalent Adsense ad would pay.

I’ve only had these running for a few hours and already I’ve seen some of their ads appearing which is great, as this will raise the average CPM of each page.

They also offer Active Interstitials ads, which are full-page interactive ads containing an advertiser’s landing page or branding message. Normally I hate these ads, but AdBrite handle these very well as they only appear after a visitor’s third pageview, and also don’t take over the whole page and can be closed quite easily. I haven’t seen one myself yet on Connected Internet, but you can see one in action here on the eFax site.
