Useful WordPress Tweaks And Plugins

View Comments December 15, 2006 | Everton

Over the course of this month, I’ve made some useful WordPress tweaks and added some useful new plugins, some of which I’ve already shared. Here’s the full list of tweaks I’ve made recently:

  1. Added MYBlogLog Community images at the bottom of my sidebar. It’s been nice to be able to see my readers for the first time
  2. Installed the Myavatars plugin that displays MyBlogLog user images in comments
  3. Beefed up my comment spam and trackback spam protection by adding the Math Comment Spam and Trackback Validator plugins, in addition to Akismet. This has been nice as it’s allowed me to catch the 1-2 false positives that Akismet was creating each day
  4. Feed readers will have noticed that Related Posts are now showing in my feed. I think this is a vital addition and I accomplished this by following these instructions
  5. Themed Login and Register plugin, which has made my login pages look a bit friendlier although they still need a bit of work

  • I use bcSpamBlock + Akismet
  • [Comment ID #47966 Will Be Quoted Here]

I agree with Akismet; I don't know what SK does, but I'm developing a new plugin to make the user noticed when his/her comment has been flagged as spam, I think it'll be useful..
  • I would agree with Everton regarding Spam Karma, but it atleast notifies the visitor if his comments are marked as spam. Akismet fails to do this, hence commentator never knows that his comment landed into spambin.

Usually, Bloggers are blamed that he delete comments, infact Akismet does this
  • but how would you know given that it automatically deletes 'spam'?
  • SK2 has never killed an email here. :) And it's permanently learning from it. Maybe you have used a buggy version? I have 2.2-FINAL here and works like a charm.
  • I'm not a big fan of spam karma as I don't like the way it automatically deletes spam, as this will mean that you can't fix false positives.

I can't remember what BB does - I'll have another look at this one.
  • Me, too. Plus BB2, Akismet4SK2 and CPR. :)
  • i use spam karma 2.2 instead of Math Comment Spam
