Feed Overload - I’ve Read 11,130 Posts From 114 Feeds Over The Last 30 Days

I just spotted in Scoble’s feed a post on a new feature within Google Reader that gives stats on a user’s usage. Here are my key RSS stats:

From your 114 subscriptions, over the last 30 days you read 11,130 items, starred 21 items, and shared 1 items.

Don’t worry, I didn’t actually read 11,130 items but I did skip past that many headlines. Even still I need to get the number of feed items under control, as I’m spending too much time trying to get my unread count down, much less even reading items.

Stats are also given on the top feeds ‘read’ and the feeds that update the most frequently, and the biggest ‘offenders’ on my list are Digg (1,135/40 per day items), Kotaku (854/31 per day) and Engadget (666/24 per day). I’m going to unsubscribe from these feeds as in Digg’s case I probably only click through to 2 per day and then only digg 30% of items, and for Kotaku and Engadget probably only 1 item per day. Removing those 3 alone will remove 25% of items.

I’m also going to try and get my total number of feeds tracked back under 90.  It’s a shame Google don’t provide stats on how many sites I click through to (difficult because some sites I never visit as they publish a full feed), or how much time I spent reading each feed, which would be a proxy for how useful I find it.
How many feeds do you read every day? Is RSS starting to become unwieldy for you as well?

I was just about to write a post about the new Google Trends feature. I think it’s absolutely awesome. And lucky you Everton, you’re the most read of all my feeds.

Wow, I don’t think I’ll come even closer to you. I wish NetNewsWire had such a feature.

BTW, I’m curious to know why you closed the comments for that poll post ?

Because I want people to go through to the forum and leave comments there!

Switch to Google Reader mate - it’s the best by far.
