What Do You Use For Your AlternateURL?
I’ve been using www.alternateurl.com as my alternateURL for Google adsense for about a week or so and I want to bin them. I’ve spotted some of the ads and frankly they look awful, which probably explains why despite serving 12K ad impressions I haven’t had one click yet, giving me a zero CTR.
I have two options I think:
- Sign-up for another advertising scheme
- Producing my own house ads made up to drive traffic to key areas of my site
If I go for option 1, what service do you think I should use? I’d like to use something like Text Link Ad affiliate banners, but I can’t work out how to convert the sample code below into an url:
<a xhref=”http://www.text-link-ads.com/starter_kit.php?ref=36562″><img xsrc=” http://www.text-link-ads.com/images/text_link_ads_F_468×60.gif ” border=”0″ alt=”Text Link Ads”></a>

You have to create a blank htm file, add the text-link-ads code to it, upload it and link to the url. That should work. Have not tried it though.

Another note, I never used alternate ads before but I will try it out now. Nice tip.

Dude, you needa format the code pasted out here on the blog.
Regarding the alternate url, put the code in a html file and specify the url of the file as your alternate url for Google adsense. Will blog about this in more detail.

Is there some kind of bug in displaying the comments? I didn’t see both of Martin’s posts above until I posted my comment. Or did you just approve them?
Comment by Martin on 6 January 2007:
Ajay I experienced the same yesterday but my comments have been there for some time now. (and yours have not been there at that time)

Your adsense code needs to link to a simple html file with the alternate ad code. I use collapsing adsense ads, but then they are not monetized.
Comment by Thilak on 6 January 2007:
Just put the code in a html file and upload it your server and then put the link as you alternate URL. I’ve never used AlternateURL. I use well targeted Chitika Ads instead.

@Martin, the comments on this post or other posts? I’m a little confused about why it is happening here. Will have to ask Everton to look into it.
Comment by Martin on 6 January 2007:
Ajay it happened to me on a different post. Took between 30-60 minutes before I was able to see the comments.
Comment by Everton on 6 January 2007:
@ajay
The code is funny deliberately, as I still can’t work out how to insert code in posts
@ajay,@martin
Since I updated to the latest version of WP-Cache (2.20) no posts and comments aren’t being displayed until the cache is refreshed or I manually flush the cache. So, I’ve had to temporarily turn it off.
I’ve posted this in the forum

thanks for the tips guys. I’ve added a combination of chitika and text link ads as my alternate urls. Hopefully I’ll get something back now from previously wasted impressions.
I wasn’t able to find a replacement for my adsense 468×15 link unit - any suggestions?
Comment by Ajay on 6 January 2007:
For that, you can put up a number of affiliate text links in the HTML file.
Comment by Everton on 6 January 2007:
Thanks Ajay - I’ve replaced all of my alternate urls. I’m quite hopeful about how they’ll do and it’s better than wasting roughly 12K ad imps per week with alternateurl.com.
Even if I get a lower CPM than I do with adsense (not allowed to say what I get) I could still be looking at an extra $50 a week. Not a lot, but it’s cash I wouldn’t see otherwise, so I’m not going to turn my nose up at it.
Comment by Ajay on 6 January 2007:
All the best with that. I’m going to work on it as well.

DefaultAds is a free service for managing alternative ads when AdSense is unable to serve impressions.
