It’s Here – The iPhone

Apple finally announced the iPhone yesterday, and I was very impressed as it is way sexier than I thought it would be. I can now can see why it took so long to launch as Apple needed time to work their design magic.I was expecting something along the lines of the motorla handset, but this is so much more innovative. It just looks so sexy and cool, as well as having a great touch screen that is 3.5 inches wide. I wasn’t expecting a browser to be included, including email access.

The iPhone is an interesting alternative to a traditional smartphone, as rather than focussing on the email/web/application access it’s focussed on a bigger mass market segment – listening to music on the move.

It won’t all be plain sailing though. The battery life will frustate a lot of users, only providing 5 hours of talktime or music playtime. This will mean that most users will have to charge their device everyday, and for some, their phone won’t make it through the day. The lack of 3G support is also a big personal disappointment, as trying to even access email via GPRS is a very frustrating experience. However, I can understand why 3G support wasn’t a priority for Apple as the iPhone is clearly a multimeda handset, not a web device.

The iPhone is going to be snapped up quickly by consumers, which will add millions to Apple’s coffers, particularly as Apple will be able to maintain an artificially high iPhone price as most handsets will be purchased by the mobile networks, who will then offer big subsidies to users.

What was your take on the iPhone launch?

Reading other blogs and articles, i think the iPhone will offer up to 5 hours of talktime or up to 14 hours of music-only operation. I think that the extended battery life will occur only when the phone radio is switched off (flight mode).
