How Much Do You Need To Earn To Become A Problogger?

I considered today for the first time how much I would need to earn from blogging to consider becoming a full-time blogger, and to quit my day job. I calculated this morning that since I started taking this site and my other experimental project seriously about 3 months ago by posting regularly and adding other revenue sources in addition to Google Adsense, I’ve increased my monthly blog income by 401%. Admittedly, prior to my comeback my monthly income had fallen by 40% due to inactivity, but I’m still stunned by my increase nonetheless.
This now equates to 20% of the amount I make from my day job, which is fantastic as because all the money now goes into a separate bank account I’m not spending any of this money and saving all of it, apart from buying myself a new gadget to play with now and then.
Not bad work for a couple of hours work each day, but it’s made me think – could I make more if I went full-time?
Spending 5x as much time on the blog won’t mean that I’ll make 5x as much money, but it would help, and I would have the time to start other projects to try and make up the shortfall in earnings. I’ve always dreamt about working for myself, but I’ve never thought it could become a reality until today.
I reckon that if I hit 60% of the amount I make from my day job for 2-3 months running, I’d quit my day job and live off my online income as it’d be more than enough for my needs and the benefits of a more flexible lifestyle would definitely offset the loss of income. Obviously, my current 401% increase over the last 3 months probably won’t continue, but there’s a good chance I might hit my 60% ‘threshold’ before the end of the year.
What level would you set as your threshold to become a full-time blogger? Do you think it could happen this year, or have you already quit your day job?
