Sony Are Sabotaging Blu-ray’s Changes Of Success

Key to the success of both HD DVD and Blu-ray will be how quickly the adult entertainment industry start producing titles for the new formats. However, Sony seem determined to sabotage Blue-ray’s chances of success by not helping adult producers get their content onto Blu-ray.

This quote below from Steven Hirsch from massive porn house Vivid Enertaiment is quite telling:

“Sony is not giving any assistance in the authoring or replication of adult content on Blu-ray,” said Hirsch. “Sony is somehow trying to keep away such material from the format, which I think is a mistake.”

Hirsch also added that Sony has put restrictions on all Blu-ray manufacturing facilities that produce Disney titles disallowing them from making adult content. By comparison, the manufacturing process for Vivid’s HD DVD adult titles is much easier as it is able to make use of existing facilities. This means that adult companies are finding it hard to press their discs.

Although I admire Sony for taking this ethical stance, I think commercially it’s a suicidal move. As dailytech quite rightly state, the existence of adult films on VHS is credited as one of the main reasons for the format’s victory over Betamax.
