I have been using IBackup for several years and while it is quite good (easy interface, fast backup) I found a better/cheaper solution. You sign up for Amazon S3 storage service and only pay for the storage you use ($.015 per GB-month) and not some fixed limit like other services. To iterface with S3 I use JungleDisk (recently purchased by RackSpace) which is a one-time cost of $20 and their Plus service is just and extra $1/mo. Initial backup is time-consuming no matter what service you use but you can still use your machine while uploading using JungleDisk. After the initial upload, subsequent backups are fast (block-level update and resume) using JungleDisk Plus. A local SQLite database keeps track of your backups so you only upload files if they are newer. It also allows you to save unlimited previous copies of files (versioning) which is great for programmers who want to maintain earlier versions of software source code.

"Nice review, even if it was paid"

What do you mean Steve? Are ibackup paying people to say nice things about them? So much for "free" press. I use http://www.backupanytime.com and they haven't offered me payment to say nice things about them. I suppose they do backup my data.

I would conclude by putting backupanytime as my first choice, followed by the highest bidder between backupright and ibackup

I have looked at iBackup in the past for some clients of mine, I went through a week long due diligence process. I settled on BackupRight http://www.backupright.com but iBackup was in my top 3.

BTW, Nice review, even if it was paid. ;)

For online backup news, information and articles, there is an excellent website:

http://www.BackupReview.info

This site lists more than 400 online backup companies and ranks the top 25 on a monthly basis.

Any one can add their company in the directory. Just click on the "Search" button found at the top.

Cheers,

If ibackup was solely a backup solution, then your point would be legitimate. If you're looking for an offline storage solution only, then a more affordable route would Mozy where you can store unlimited data for $4.95/mo. What makes ibackup attractive to many users is the file sharing capability. It is an excellent way to collaborate and share/sync files. I own a web development company and work with many contractors, ibackup is the best way we have found to share project files and keep things in sync. We used to use groove's p2p tool, but this was problematic, especially with certain contractors overseas with spotty internet connections.

I had searched for an affordable online backup service for almost 1 year. and I am now using DriveHQ service. You cannot find any better online backup service than DriveHQ.com. Please look at their website and live flash demo:

But on a home PC the files that are valuable tend to be photos and music i.e. big files. Home PCs don't tend to have a lot of documents i.e. small files that need saving, so that's why I think that the way that online backup services are currently structured and priced doesn't make them attractive to the mass market.

But on a home PC the files that are valuable tend to be photos and music i.e. big files. Home PCs don't tend to have a lot of documents i.e. small files that need saving, so that's why I think that the way that online backup services are currently structured and priced doesn't make them attractive to the mass market.

I think you cannot use online storage services just to backup whatever you want. An online storage service like IBackup comes into play when you don’t want to lose data that is very important to you. Instead, if you try to backup 100 GB at one go, it might take weeks to finish the task and your computer might crash also..

IBackup will send you external USB hard drives or Snapservers, if you want to do an initial backup of 100GB or more of data. You can plug-in the external hard drives directly to your computer via USB, do an initial backup directly onto the device and ship the devices back to IBackup. Once user’s data is transferred from these devices to IBackup’s data centers, users can continue incremental backups online. If you don’t want to lose data that is critical to you, an online storage service like IBackup will be the best. I don’t think Xdrive and Streamload will do something like this.
