Do You Remember When You First Used The Internet? Mine Involves Jennifer Aniston

Jeninifer’s lovely hair

A story on Scoble’s site just made me chuckle. Sugata Mitra put a computer in a hole in a wall in a remote village in India , and recorded what happened. The first to discover the computer was 13 year-old school dropout. He apparently told Sugata that:

“this is the first television I’ve seen that I can do something on.”

By the end of the first day this enterprising kid had taught himself how to use the Internet, and had also taught 70 other people how to use it. I hope they release some videos or photos soon. Update: I’ve located Sugata Mitra’s site.

It reminds me of the first time I used the internet way back in 1996. I’d just started my first job for a management consultancy firm, which involved doing a lot of desk research. For one of my cases someone suggested I try the new computer in the in-house library that could ’search Yahoo!’ -the ‘I’ (it was Internet back then, not plain old internet!) word wasn’t even mentioned.

I had no idea what was going on, and it was only when one of my colleagues came over and he said he’d heard of the internet and that he’d also heard there were millions of websites dedicated to Jennifer Aniston’s hair. We decided to do a search to see what we could find, and we indeed discovered that there were hundreds of sites dedicated to Jennifer, including a few just about her hair!

Ok, I’ve now embarrassed myself by admitting that my first non-work related internet search was to look for sites on Jennifer Aniston’s hair. It’s time to share your early internet experiences - any funny stories? They can’t be as embarrassing as mine!
