UK Media War Takes A New Turn

February has been an interesting month in the UK. Everywhere you turn there is an ad for Broadband or Digital TV as all of the players have brought millions of pounds of advertising to try and dilute Virgin Media’s fronted by Uma Thurman. Uma is going to be paid a staggering $36m for the campaign. (I’m not usually a fan of hers, but judging by how good Uma looks in this ad I think she’s going to be worth every penny) There were even rumours in the market that BSkyB bought EVERY available outdoor slot just to ensure that Virgin Media couldn’t buy them.

Now the war between Virgin Media and Sky has intensified even further after Virgin Media refused to pay Sky’s unreasonable price for its Sky One, Sky Two, Sky Three, Sky News and Sky Sports News channels. The channels will be removed over the next couple of days and Virgin are going to do the right thing by its customers and give up to £9.75 per month back.

I think Sky really need to be careful as Virgin Media have already started to attack it’s poor value-for-money movies and sports bundles, and by playing silly buggers in negotiations all they are doing is allowing customers to assess first-hand whether their channels are worth it.

    Everton,

Was always wondering .. what do people generally think of Virgin Media in the UK?

Over here in Toronto, most of us usually have a good impression of the Virgin brand because they seem kinda fun and hip.

Most people buy into the Richard Branson ‘myth’ even though as a businessman he is awful and his only two successes are the megastores and the airlines. Everything else he has launched has lost money
