AutoRoll - New Automatic BlogRolling Service
I got an email from the CEO of Criteo yesterday asking me to try out the new AutoRoll Widget service which is in beta. The idea behind the AutoRoll is that it automatically creates a list of the most popular other sites that the readers of that particular site read. Other sites will do the same on their AutoRolls, so hopefully if your site is popular then your site will be featured on AutoRolls on other sites.
I think it’s a nice idea, but I don’t think it’s going to be successful. The problem is I think that any average or small blog that adds the AutoRoll will just be linking out to sites without a hope in hell of being featured on other sites’ AutoRolls. The same Uber-blogs will just keep appearing over and over again.
Have you tried the AutoRoll service? Do you disagree, or would you find it useful to see what other sites your readers tend to visit even if you don’t get any links back?

Dont think it will work.small bloggers dont want ppl to go away from there site to others and Big bloggers sell links on their site….If they come with some monetizing idea with it…may be still not sure

I think the whole idea of having a blogroll is to influence your rankings on Search Engine. In this case, the widget uses javascript (I guess), so it defeats the whole purpose of having a blogroll

Soon to be dead company.
It’s about two years too late for blog rolling. This should be OPML if anything.

Thanks for this feedback.
We try to ensure that incoming and outgoing traffic stay relatively balanced. This means that roughly you should get as many link impressions of your blog on other blogs than lilnk impression on your blog. Unless of course, you target a very niche audience which is exclusive to your blog (this does not happen that much, as most readers tend to read several blogs).
Actually most small blogs that have installed AutoRoll enjoy a very balanced traffic, as they can see on their private statistic module.
This idea of AutoRoll is indeed not to increase your ranking, but to get qualified incoming visitors, which are more likely to become regular readers than the casual visitors coming from search engines.

How do you manage to do that without manipulating the results?
Comment by John on 1 March 2007:
There is no need for manipulation. It’s naturally embedded in the algorithm. It’s just about capping.
