Friday Fun: Tribute To Giggsy
I’ve just read that Ryan Giggs will play his 700th game tomorrow for Man Utd in a career spanning 16 years. This is a major achievement for a modern footballer. Anyway, as a tribute to Giggsy, I’ve posted videos of two of his best moments.
Although, he never managed to play on the World Stage because he was Welsh (and the general belief that he could have played for England is not true), he has definitely been one of the best players in the World for most of his career.
I’ve always been a big fan of Giggsy and the rest of that generation of Man Utd players (Scholes, Beckham, Nicky Butt, Neville Brothers, Robbie Savage) as they are all the same age as me and because one of my best friends when I was growing up, John O’Kane (he didn’t quite make the grade), was whisked up to Manchester with his family to join the other players, and because Giggsy plays left wing which was my favourite position as I had blistering pace, although I used to get pushed into the middle because I was a good ball winner.
The goal in the FA Cup Semi-Final against Arsenal has to be his greatest goal ever. Not just because of the goal, but because of the quality of the game which had two teams at full strength competing for 120 mins, a sending off and even a penalty save!

Ah, John O’Kane! Seen him play quite a bit, I think he was here (Blackpool) for 2 years. *checks*

He played more first team games for us than anyone else, oddly. However, he wasn’t quite good enough (mostly down to his workrate) and left for Hyde United(!?)

Yeah, he went from Man Utd to Everton and then to Bolton and then to Bury, Bradford, Wimbledon and Burnley (loan) and then Blackpool. Never really settled anywhere which is a shame as he had a lot of talent.
When we were growing up I never twigged just how good he was, but looking back it was obvious e.g. how many 7 year olds play in an under 11 team, and are also one of the best players??!!!
I always remember the first time he played for United on TV - he had a shocker. It was in a Champions league game, and United were down 2-0 within 15 mins due to John’s mistakes. I think he got subbed after abotu 30 mins

Man U??
Everton, I didnt think you were a Man U fan… I think the 90’s players were some of the best of there time (look at the england sqaud, it might as well of been Man U), but Man U??
Aren’t you from London??

I’m a spurs fan but I’ve been a closet Man Utd because I’ve ‘grown up’ with those players. I’ve been tracking their progress for nearly 20 years since I was at school because I grew up with John.
I live in London but I was actually born and raised in Nottingham.
