Making Money From A Blog Isn’t Just About Getting More Traffic

JohnTP has just posted a nice comparison of My Blog Earnings compared to John Chow and Thilak who were also brave enough to publish theirs. What he’s done is rank our earnings by scheme.

A few numbers jumped out at me immediately:

  • Text Link Ads – $1,162.50 (John Chow), $319.37 (Everton), $109.9 (Thilak)
  • Direct Ad Sales – $400.00 (John Chow), $150.00 (Everton), $75 (Thilak)
  • ReviewMe – $2,250.00 (John Chow), $200 (Thilak), $125.00 (Everton)

The reason why these numbers jumped out at me is because although my traffic is significantly higher than John’s (220K visits and 452K page views Vs 128k visits and 267k page views), John has had significantly more success than me at generating income that you would expect to be related to traffic levels such as Text Link Ads(aff) and ReviewMe(book a review). I think this proves that generating money from your blog isn’t just about driving traffic – it’s also about creating a online identity for yourself that is well known on the internet or in your particular content niche.

Other big disparities in our income streams can be seen in John’s affiliate sales ($1,005) and both John and and Thilak’s earnings from alternative ad networks (John:$375.00, Thilak: $420.68). I’d love to know which schemes John is promoting as my all-time affiliate income is only $25!

Your text link ads link is broken. you might wanna fix that.

As for income, John writes exceptional pre-sell pages that motivate people to sign up under his affiliate links. To increase your affiliate sales, I would try removing Adsense ads from your affiliate pages. That’s one way to increase your conversions.

And it’s never been about traffic. I made nearly $500 in February with only 15,000 pageviews.

With proper optimization, you could make over $10k easily.

    Thanks fixed

Can you give some example links please as I don’t actually have any affiliate pages at the moment

A pre-sell page is just like a splash page, except its main goal is to sell the visitor on the specified affiliate.

    Here’s some examples:

    Cash Crate Review

    Text Link Ads Review

I think John would have had better results if he removed Adsense Ads like I did with my Cash Crate Review. In less than 3 days, I have 2 referrals, which isn’t too bad for my little blog.

Before you started this experiment, I believe all three of you (Everton, John Chow, Thilak) had established blogs with traffic. How long do you think it would take for a new blog to generate enough traffic to create this kind of income?

  5. Everton says:

Hmm not strictly true. This blog has indeed been around a while, but it was lacking love during most of 2006 when months would go between posts, and then only a few posts a month.

I started posting regularly again in November, so I’ve grown my earnings from $573.18 (100% adsense) in October to $4000 in 4 months. I’ve worked damn hard to do this, but I believe that similar growth levels can be achieved from scratch.

Okay, that’s good to know and gives me something to shoot for. Thanks for sharing.
