MBL Community: How Not To Be A Successful Blogger

Engtech

Engtech buzzed me in the forum about a post he wrote way back in December. I’m really glad he did as it’s probably the most thought out post I’ve seen for a long, long time. It’s also an amusing read.

The full title of the post is You Can Be A Good Example Or A Horrible Warning - How NOT To Be A Successful Blogger’. Bit of a mouthful, but it basically chronicles all the mistakes that Engtech made when he set out blogging before he knew any better. I think many of them could be corrected, but I think Engtech is now too set in his ways!

What mistakes did you make when you first started out?

I think one of the biggest mistakes I made was starting this blog on a url that had my name within it, which was assigned to me by Blogware for testing purposes. Within a few days I realised my mistake and rushed out and purchased a domain name, which was when I made my second mistake. I purchased a .co.uk address as I decided that I was going to ‘corner’ the UK market by becoming the leading UK tech blogger. Unfortunately, I didn’t factor in that the majority of my traffic would still come from the US so a .com address would have been better.

I think I’ve still managed to do ok, but I’d love to have a .com address. Maybe one day the owner of connectedinternet.com will see sense and reduce his prices. Currently he’s asking for $9500, which I’m sure is because he’s seen how much connectedinternet.co.uk is worth now.

There will be another post from MBL Community tomorrow. Because there are too many members for me to check all of your sites daily, I’ve set up a new thread in the forum for you to let me know when you’ve written a good post. Please only post something you think is good or that fellow readers will be interested in, otherwise I’ll just ignore all of your suggestions.

I live in the UK, so I feel .co.uk actually adds alot more credibility to your site. For some reason I just can’t ‘trust’ the url connectedinternet.com (sounds spammy! :P) as much so hope you’ll keep this for a long long time even if connectedinternet.com does become available.

I ran across your blog via ghacks.net due to some information you have. Anyway, I think it’s interesting to check your site daily as it can provide different information that I don’t get anywhere else on my US sites.

The .co.uk was not much of a factor as the content is what I was looking for.
