Sending Bad Messages Via SMS – Would You Do It?

View Comments March 9, 2007 | Everton

My first job after uni was with a firm of management consultants back when funny emails were just starting to get circulated. One of the funniest emails I received was a copy of a presentation a management consultant had sent to his girlfriend to explain in consultant-speak why she was being downsized i.e. dumped (If anyone has this deck can they please send it to me).

Apparently according to The Guardian, sending someone an SMS has become the latest way to send bad news:

From filing for divorce or giving someone the sack, texting allows the sender to avoid uncomfortable face-to-face confrontation. In other words it’s the 21st century cowards’ way out.

I’m a big fan of SMS and I used to send about 400 a month, until last month when there was a problem with my SIM which meant I couldn’t send SMSs for a few weeks, and I ‘rediscovered’ speaking to people. It’s amazing how many relationships you can have now, without actually ever meeting someone or hearing their voice e.g. I have daily conversations with many of my readers and I will probably never ever meet them.

But, I would never send bad messages via SMS – that would be going to far. Maybe, a ‘Runnin l8 can’t make it dis evenin’, but never a ‘UR Fired’. Would you be comfortable doing this? Have you done it already?

This a sad reflection on society today! I'd rather use my Blackberry and e-mail....
  • I think this is an indicator of a larger problem where people are disconnecting on a personal level.

It is an important social skill to be able to handle conflict and still have a positive outcome.

I would not SMS somebody with bad news. But that is just me.
  • I have never really been into SMS that much. It it simply more expensive than a quick email or an IM. Of course there are some people who don't use that and so the only way to contact them is my phone or sms, but still, i'm not really a fan. As for bad news it is definatly better to just tell them to their face...
