Tipstrs

One of my colleagues pointed out a new site to me yesterday called Tipstrs. The idea behind the site that it allows readers to pool their knowledge by sharing tips. Tips are submitted into categories and readers can, you guessed it, rate and comment the tips.

The reason why I like the idea behind the site is that one of the drawbacks of digg and many other sites is that they focus on fresh content and old posts that might have been brilliant go wherever old homepage submissions go to die. However, in many cases just because a tip is old doesn’t mean that it’s no longer any good or relevant.

Over time Tipstrs could help to plug this hole by promoting timeless tips and advice, but at the moment it’s being held back not having a huge selection of tips. If I get time this weekend I might seed it with a few from this site.

  • That would be great - it sounds like a new project... perhaps a plugin to "weight" articles over 3 months old... you could set up a new type of social network option like Digg or Bumpzee to have folks vote on the various articles, then have a page with those articles listed by tags... hrmmmm...
  • One of the problems I want to solve with this blog is to find a way to highlight old posts that are relevant, as most of the questions people ask me I've already covered off in the past, or a person who finds a current post useful may also find an older tip useful.
  • This is a good point about old posts still being useful. After reviewing some of the older communities I belonged to, I found about 10 new article ideas that I will be writing about at Bloglyne - it is always interesting to go back and review what you used to talk about and see if it still applies.
