SightSpeed 6.0 Launches
The best vidoeconferencing service SightSpeed just got even better with the release of SightSpeed 6.0. If you have a webcam for your PC then this is the application you should use.
At my last firm we did some head-2-head testing of various Video-Conferencing services and in terms of quality SightSpeed won, although at the time SightSpeed required a better than average PC to get the best quality out of it. If I remember SightSpeed told me that the reason their video quality was the best was because they use a clever algorithm to ensure that the area of the image that the user actually looks at is optimised, rather than trying to optimise the entire image.

I haven’t tested SightSpeed 6.0 yet myself, but according to Lifehacker the software has made some noteworthy improvements over version 5.0. It features a more intuitive interface, support for multiple text-chat windows, integrated video-mail playback, e-mail notification of newly received video mail and, perhaps most importantly, better video quality.
If you have a webcam you should definitely test it out as the basic version is free.

Everton - Have you thought about putting up a software review site with nifty stars and the like? Do you know if this application is only for video conferencing, or will it also record video?
If anybody needs a desktop video recorder - I have a good article at bloglyne.com for a free application which works great for me
(and I’m not affiliated with them either!)

I don’t think it reocrds videos.
A software review site is a good idea. Do you know much about this? Are there packages/templates that can be downloaded?

Everton and Mark, yes, SightSpeed 6.0 enables recording of videos in addition to live video calling and conferencing and voice only calling. With SightSpeed 6.0, the user can (1) record the video call or conference itself and embed the file in their blog or website for a true “interview” playback experience; and (2) record high quality videos and either post them to their blog or website and also separately vmail them to anyone (whether or not they are a SightSpeed user). Check it out. Also, check out our latest product which is in early early beta — http://www.vlip.com — the first interactive online video community.

@Peter
Vlip looks like a very good idea as it overcomes one of the major reason why video-calling hasn’t taken off i.e. your friends need to have a camera as well, and it also improves the video-messaging concept as at least you can leave video messages for people who can at least leave messages back.
What are the minimum recommended specs for SightSpeed these days? I seem to remember that a much higher spec was recommended by Scott when we did our testing than say with Vibe, eyeball etc.
Comment by Peter Csathy (CEO of SightSpeed/Vlip) on 20 March 2007:
Everton, minimum recommended specs for SightSpeed 6.0 are:
1 ghz PC or Mac
