Playstation 3s Accounting for 56% Of Folding@Home Processing Power
It seems like I’m not the only one putting my Playstation 3 to good use when I’m not using it by running the Folding@Home application. 13,000 other Playstation 3 owners have followed suit and already the Playstation 3 is accounting for 56% of the total processing power of Folding@Home. Together over an amazing 300 TFLOPS is being produced. Who knows how much power can be produced once more PS3s get involved?
So far I’ve contributed 4 units to the Bloggers United Folding@Home team. I haven’t contributed more as I had to withdraw my desktop PC as for some reason the Folding@Home app raised my Core temp to 60 degrees, even though it only hits 50 degrees in the past when I did my stress testing. Anyway, at least my PS3 is picking up the slack and I’m closing in on Zath. I’ve only been running my PS3 in short shifts though as although the PS3 itself doesn’t get too hot, it’s giving out so much heat I’m worried that it might damage my unit!
To join the team all you have to do is install Folding@home and when prompted enter 54262 as your team number. That’s it.

I find when I run Folding@Home on the university computers - the ones with noisy processors become far noiser than before - aka noticeably louder where I cringe and give the surrounding people an embarrassed smile.

Just tell them it’s for a good cause

I’ve been quite surprised how much work these PS3’s are getting done, is there anywhere can you tell where all these PS3’s are located Everton? - It would be interesting to see the numbers for the UK given its just been launched over here.
I hope that they can release an Xbox 360 version, then there could be a bit of healthy fan boy rivalry in aid of a good cause!

Yes, if you have a PS3! There’s a really cool globe displayed as a screensaver that shows where the PS3s are located that are running Folding@Home

And after 2 years I only have 400WU on my computer.
Comment by Mosey on 26 March 2007:
Hehe, Everton
I might just do that next time.
Globalwarning: I find processing extremely slow as well on the university computer, not surprised at the 400 after two years - it took weeks just to get through 1 for me (albeit I’m not logged in 24/7 but still… )

It’d get quite sad with people starting to overclock their consoles!

Actually, thinking about it, Microsoft might not want Folding - think of all the extra failures they’d get from people churning through units all the time, it’s bad enough now with people playing games!
