15MB Data Per Day For £1 From Vodafone In June

I got a call back from Vodafone as they were a bit concerned about a customer survey I’d completed where I’d given them 2 out of 10 overall. I explained that one of my beefs was because of the current high £2.35/MB data charges and I said that the new tariffs in June had better be good or I was transferring to T-Mobile when my contract ended.

The rep I spoke to told me about the new tariffs coming in June to try and appease me, and they are definitely a step in the right direction:

  • Each day, once £1 or 1/2 MB used then up to 15MB can be used thereafter with no extra charge
  • Once 15MB used then pricing reverts to new lower price of £2/MB rather than £2.35/MB
  • New data packages that will provide daily transfer bundles, including a new ‘Unlimited’ package

I think the new pricing structure is quite innovative as it will allow users to experiment with online services without users having to worry too much about their daily bills. 15MB each day for a pound should keep all but the most extreme users happy, who will still face big data bills unless they go for one of the new data packages.

My current monthly data usage is around 40MB and my bills can hit £90. With the new tariffs the worst my bills could ever hit is £30 which would allow me to use 450MB/pm rather than 40MB/pm. My bills will be even less if I signup for one of the new bundles.

All I need now is a good price on my Nokia N95 upgrade and I’ll be very happy. Hopefully Vodafone will still have me marked down as a churn risk in the summer, so that I get another free upgrade!

  • Well, I payed 500 euro a month for Vodafone Internet on my mobile!

Hmmm.. I wish they implement that system in our location. Here, they charge 50 cents per KB downloaded. They also charge nearly the same amout for a minute of call. And they charge 30 cents per SMS.

It's why Smart and Globe are among the richest companies this side of asia. grrrrr

That's pretty cool that you have that much power. You do a survey and the company responds to your low rating. But, that's good about the new pricing structure.
  • I switched from Vodafone to T-Mobile in the week when i got my N95 and I can't tell you the difference it makes knowing I can browse when I want for as long as I want for a fixed price of £7pm. I just can't see how Vodafone can charge effectively £30 per month for 1/2GB usage.

Also, don't forget it the £1 only kicks in if you use over a GB each day, so if you use 0.9GB you will pay £1.8! They've also made Vodafone Live usage chargeable, wheareas it used to be free.

the real kicked for me was the removal of data from the extras packs. At least before you could buy £60 of data for £30. Now, you have to pay full whack.

Well I am disgusted at the new charges. the reason I went with Vodafone in February this year was because the sold me on the fact that I could roam most of the internet free and I only paid if I wanted to download. Now I am being told that in order to look at the 10 or 15 news and sports news pages every day I will have to pay up to £30 per month !

I have written to and called them and their answer is basically if you don't like it then leave (After paying the £280 leaving fee) Obviously I won't pay that and I have written to the Managing Direct on his personal email address to let him know my feelings too. I am also consider a small claims court claim against them if they won't let me leave without paying the leaving fee.

I've got 4 months to go before my contract expires so it will be interesting to see what bundles they will offer in that time. What i'm most unhappy with is the fact that vodafone is claiming that this price increase (thats what it is to me) is because "vodafone is bringing the full internet to your mobile". Well can I just say that I have been using the full internet (via the opera mini browser) for years. So vodafone are offering me nothing new.

It would have been nice if vodafone could have just left the data/text bundle alone and offered (for subscription) a high data usage bundle.
  • The only thing that kept me from leaving vodafone years ago was the data bundled with texts which saved me £15-20 per month. There’s nothing to keep me at vodafone now.

The data I was given for the PAYG tariffs - there will be new bundles so I would wait and see if I were you.

I have just switched my blackerry to T-Mobile after getting annoyed with the Vodafone tarifs. They gave me unlimited data (1GB) and £34 of call credit, all for £28 per month. Even with this new tarif, Vodafone is still way off.

When vodafone bring this plan in on 1st june it will cost me more on my bill every month. At the moment my data use is tied in to my texts. I get 100 texts, 8 meg of data or a mixture of both per month. I usually use 5 meg of data and 10-15 texts. I never get any charge. From 1 June its gonna cost me 25-50p per day to use the same amount of data. The only thing that kept me from leaving vodafone years ago was the data bundled with texts which saved me £15-20 per month. There's nothing to keep me at vodafone now.
  • Airtel in India rocks! Unlimited data plan when I was visiting last year!
